The Trigger Event

The formation of AAHI was triggered by a scenario that most families of IDD people fear:

  • The long-time caregiver for Brooks–a beloved member of Aktion Club–retired at the age of 93.
  • After obtaining local support was unsuccessful, the State of Washington relocated Brooks to an Adult Family Home.
  • That facility is 45 minutes away, far from the community in which Brooks grew up and thrived.

By, For and In the Community

Most of the 45 IDD individuals here in Anacortes are members of the Kiwanis Aktion Club. They have been members of this club for 15 years, and competed in Special Olympics for more than 20 years.
They work together monthly to collect donated electronics at E-Cycle, and annually to fundraise for Skagit County’s Meals-on-Wheels. They work together, play together, and make Anacortes a richer, more compassionate place.
