The Mission of Anacortes Able Housing

What We Do

Housing & Community

  • Anacortes Able Housing Initiative (AAHI) will create and sustain multiple supported living homes on Fidalgo Island.
  • We understand that within the Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled (IDD) community, there is a wide spectrum of abilities and needs for support, so we will tailor each dwelling – house, apartment, duplex, etc – and caregiving to each tenant’s needs.
  • AAHI’s goal is that ALL the IDD individuals can continue to live here in the Anacortes area, so they may stay connected to their job and friends and wider community.

Support Families & Guardians

  • AAHI is not only a resource for IDD individuals, but for those who love and care for them: their parents, siblings and non-related caregivers.
  • One of the biggest motivators for AAHI is offering peace of mind for those who currently live with and support IDD people, to assure those vulnerable adults will live in a protected, supported home once the caregivers can no longer provide one.

Seek Grants for Shovel Ready Projects

  • In the first year(s) as a foundation, AAHI will focus on buying and remodeling existing homes to accommodate those IDD individuals and families who have the most urgent need.
  • As time goes on, AAHI has wider goals of developing land and building village-type settings to avail IDD tenants as well as typical community members of affordable, sustainable housing.

Who We are Doing This For

  • As of February, 2025, AAHI has identified 45 IDD adults in our community who need supporting living housing now and in the future.  They work here, have friends here, and thrive here.
  • That also means  there at least 45 parents, siblings, other family members or non-related caregivers who are worried about what will happen if they can no longer provide a home and supportive care.
  • AAHI hopes the needs of both will be met, now and in the future.
